An 8s/2 cotton thread (also called Size 8 Perle/Pearl Cotton) is a medium-thick, non-divisible twisted thread. Because it does not separate into thin strands like regular stranded floss, it sits highly raised on the fabric.
It is perfectly suited for heavy, textured, and structural hand embroidery rather than delicate needle painting.
1. Best Embroidery Techniques for 8s/2 Thread
• Sashiko & Boro Embroidery: Its thickness and strength exactly mimic traditional Japanese Sashiko thread, which relies on heavy, distinct running stitches.
• Hardanger & Counted Thread Work: This thread is the standard choice for satin stitch blocks (kloster blocks) and structural motifs in Hardanger embroidery.
• Kantha & Folk Quilting: The heavy 2-ply texture is excellent for running-stitch embroidery on layers of quilts, throws, and heavy cotton.
